What is obesity ?


Obesity is a serious, chronic disease that can have a negative effect on many systems in your body. People who are overweight or obese have a much greater risk of developing serious conditions, including:


1. Heart disease



A heart attack is the death of a segment of heart muscle caused by a loss of blood supply. The blood is usually cut off when an artery supplying the heart muscle is blocked by a blood clot. If some of the heart muscle dies, a person experiences chest pain and electrical instability of the heart muscle tissue.

2. Type 2 diabetes

Obesity is the major cause of type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes usually begins in adulthood but, is now actually occurring in children. Obesity can cause resistance to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. When obesity causes insulin resistance, the blood sugar becomes elevated. Even moderate obesity dramatically increases the risk of diabetes.

3. Bone and joint disease

Obesity frequently contributes to soft tissue damage which means a progressive wearand-tear disease of the joints. The impact of obesity is especially felt in osteoarthritis of the hip and knee joints. Every pounds of fat in our body will give a presssure on knee joint. What cause obesity?

Our modern lifestyles are also causing more people to be obese. Changing work patterns, using technology, changes in portion size and the built environment all contribute to making us gain weight.


How do people start to gain weight?

The common reason would be ;



i.    Lack of exercise
  • Nowadays, people neither go to the gym nor for jogging because they’re too busy with their work. People couldn't go the gym because they're a lack of time.
  • If people are not very active with their physical activities , the calories in their body will not burn. With a sedentary lifestyle, they can easily take in more calories in their diet every day than they can burn it and use through exercise and normal daily activities.


ii.  Lack of health consciousness
  • Nowadays, people are lack of health conscious because they love to eat and drink too much sugar rich stuff.
  • They also tend to choose fast food such as MCD, Pizza Hut, KFC, Domino’s Pizza, Maggie and so on.




iii.Unhealthy diet and eating habits
  • Weight gain is inevitable if people whom regularly eat more calories than they burn.
  • Some types of foods are more likely to lead to weight gain.
  • Foods that tend to increase the risk of weight gain include;

a. Fried foods, such as french fries
b. Fatty and processed meats
c. Many dairy products
d. Sweetened juices, sodas, and alcoholic drinks
e. Processed, high-carb foods, such as bread
  • Eating too much of these foods and doing too little exercise can result in weight gain and obesity.

Fat cells have unique features, these cells will collect large amounts of fat molecules so that they make the surface area of ​​the arteries and veins narrower. The case of obesity is increasing today. This happens because of the attitude of indifference to some who do not care about their health problems. As we all know, many people dying just because obesity. Most common factor that leads to obesity is negligence. Deputy Health Minister Lee Boon Chye has stated that, apathetic attitude of certain individual on their health problems which lead the individual to death. Deputy Health Minister Lee Bon Chye has also stated that the human attitude whom often uses "So what", to remove their attitude “so what” and concern about health problems can reduce the health issue of obesity among Malaysians. He also states that if someone who is obese, they are also exposed to heart disease, diabetes, stork, apnoea and so on. He also stated that obesity is not just an appearance it will also have an adverse effect on the health of people who are obese. He also hoped that Malaysia would use (Suku Suku Separuh) which would mean a quarter of carbohydrates, proteins, vegetables, fruits and others. It is also a practice that can be done in the community to make a good impact.

Malaysia has now become one of the countries with the highest prevalence of obesity in Asia. Obesity has reached alarming level in the Asean Economic Community and especially in Malaysia where 44.2% of the population are overweight.



According to the Malaysian Health Ministry, one in six Malaysians are either overweight or obese. A recent study showed that 22% of Malaysians above the age of 30 were also diabetic patients. The daily sugar intake among Malaysians was too high, at 51 grammes, which is among the World Health Organisation reccommendation of 50 grammes. Interestingly, university studies revealed that women in Malaysia were satistically more obese than men, with a higher rate among Indian and Malay women compared to Chinese women.

According to WHO statistics, Thailand has the second largest number of obese people in Southeast Asia despite the traditional and generally healthy diet of rice, chicken, fish and vegetables in the country. This food mix has not disappeared but is seriously threatened by the availability of snacks and convenience food. It should also be noted that Thais, along with other Asian nations, prefer higher calory white rice as opposed to the more healthy brown types.
China is home to more than 300 million-plus people with weight problems and recent studies indicate that the problem is especially prevalent among youth. In 2005, there were 18 million in China who were considered obese. In 2011, that number jumped to 100 million. In this regard, Vietnam is catching up with China. While 28% of rural children suffer from malnutrition, according to the country’s National Institute of Nutrition, 20% from urban areas suffer from the opposite, obesity.
