What is obesity ?

Obesity is a serious, chronic disease that can have a negative effect on many systems in your body. People who are overweight or obese have a much greater risk of developing serious conditions, including:

1. Heart disease

A heart attack is the death of a segment of heart muscle caused by a loss of blood supply. The blood is usually cut off when an artery supplying the heart muscle is blocked by a blood clot. If some of the heart muscle dies, a person experiences chest pain and electrical instability of the heart muscle tissue.

2. Type 2 diabetes

Obesity is the major cause of type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes usually begins in adulthood but, is now actually occurring in children. Obesity can cause resistance to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. When obesity causes insulin resistance, the blood sugar becomes elevated. Even moderate obesity dramatically increases the risk of diabetes.

3. Bone and joint disease

Obesity frequently contributes to soft tissue damage which means a progressive wearand-tear disease of the joints. The impact of obesity is especially felt in osteoarthritis of the hip and knee joints. Every pounds of fat in our body will give a presssure on knee joint. Patients also may experienece the following symptoms;
  1. Shoulder : Lower functional outcomes following rotator cuff injuries and repair. Spine: Higher rates of hardware failure, complications, and infections.
  2. Hand : A direct decrease in hand grip strength.
  3. Hip and Knee: Significantly higher rates of complication and hardware failure after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). However, postoperative function greatly improves after surgery in individuals with obesity.
  4. Foot and Ankle: Excess weight can cause chronic overuse disorders of the foot and ankle like “flat foot,” which can lead to plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and foot and ankle pain.
